Later this year, the "missing link" of the Tarka Trail running nearby Willingcott will finally be developed. With permission granted, a multi-track section accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians between Willingcott and Buttercombe Lane is soon to be constructed!
This is an amazing opportunity for Willingcott as access to the Tarka Trail will be even more convenient! Currently, there is a 6.4 km gap between Knowle and Willingcott on the trail that extends from Ilfracombe to Barnstaple. Devon County Council has declared its completion a "top priority" as it would enhance their endeavour of establishing a coast-to-coast cycle network between Ilfracombe and Plymouth.
This year, the council has secured a window between November 2022 and March 2023 to commence construction of its 600m (2,000ft) stretch of the project. The route follows that of an old railroad line in which the council owns all land required for development. An anticipated start date is expected soon! Once completed, visitors to Willingcott and nearby towns and villages such as Braunton, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe will be able to explore more.
Immerse yourself in the gorgeous North Devon vistas via the Tarka Trail, an 180-mile journey that's composed of mostly traffic-free footpaths and bike lanes. This path is predominantly level terrain, lending itself perfectly to both cycling and walking while you take in all that this breathtaking region has to offer.
We highly recommend this as an opportune nearby route to get some fresh air and explore what it has to offer. Once the missing link is completed, even more people from Willingcott will be able to access it - we are beyond thrilled for the chance of exploring ourselves!
