The Tarka Trail

While it’s obvious to head for some of the coastal towns, villages and beaches, there are also plenty of great routes which cover both coast and countryside to explore by bike or on foot. For example, a cycle ride to Fremington Quay, where there’s a wonderful ‘must visit’ café, is only 1 hour and 20 minutes away by bike via The Tarka Trail (also listed as National Cycle Route 27 on this stretch), so would make a gentle and pleasurable ride out for a family of mixed abilities and ages..

The Tarka Trail is a 180 mile, figure of eight walking and cycling trail, and fans of Henry Williamson’s novel Tarka the Otter will probably know that it follows the route travelled by Tarka in the story. The landscape en-route is as varied as it is fascinating. The best part? The Tarka trail runs adjacent to Willingcott and our beautiful parkland, so you can join the route really easily!
